Study a new language

Due to social distancing guidelines and the wider impact of COVID-19 we have decided that all 10-week classes for Term 2 will take place online.

Application deadline is 9am on Monday 7th December 2020.


All DMU students are eligible to take part in one language class per academic year. The maximum number of places in each class is 25, and the minimum number of students required for classes to go ahead is 8. Please check our eligibility criteria for further details.


Do something new this academic year and learn a new language! Through DMU Global, you can choose to learn one of the following languages: Arabic, French, German, Japanese or Spanish.

All classes start at beginner level and no previous experience is required. Classes will focus on developing practical listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a mix of interactive group work and independent learning. See our study options below:

10 Week Course


These classes run once a week and cover 20 hours of teaching. Classes will start the week commencing Monday 25 January 2021 and will end the week commencing Monday 29 March 2021.

10 week course classes



To study a language, you will need to complete our online application form using the apply now button below. Application deadline is 9am on Monday 7th December 2020. In the application form you will need to:

  • Choose the language you would like to study and select your preferred class time.
  • Tell us why you would like to learn that language. Places are limited so refer to academic, professional or personal motivations to make your application stand out.

You will receive the outcome of your application by email within 7 days of the opportunity deadline closing.

If your application is successful you will be offered a place by email. We will try to offer you your preferred class, but if this is not possible we may offer you an alternative day or time. To formally accept your place you will need to:

  • Pay your participation fee. In your offer email, you will be asked to make a payment for your course through the DMU Online Store.  You will also need to agree to the terms and conditions of our language classes.
