The Digital Entertainment & Interactive industry includes the booming Visual Effects and Animation sector. From the world’s first CG TV series on ABC to a succession of recent major animated feature films and highly rated television series, Vancouver has established itself as a truly world-leading centre of VFX & animation talent and technology. The industry has a long track record of producing cutting edge animated content ranging from award-winning shorts to internationally renowned series and features.

In Vancouver, over 60 studios make up the VFX and Animation industry, comprising the world’s largest cluster of domestic and foreign-owned studios. Students will get the opportunity to visit some of the worlds foremost production houses and discuss matters of interest with colleagues from industry.

This visit represents an opportunity to examine some of the main figures in post production and VFX. It is anticipated that students will be able to access VFX studios such as DNEG and Atmosphere (see Venom, First Man, Blade Runner, and Battlestar Galactica etc.). Other media-related activities will include the CBC Vancouver Newsroom Tour, and the Aja Tan Film Studios (access permitting of course) for the benefit of non-VFX students.

For students wishing to venture further into Fan Culture, the FanEXPO begins February 15th at the Vancouver Convention Centre, featuring attractions from Sci-Fi, Horror Films, Anime and more for a reasonable $30. For Visual Effects students, Vancouver’s SPARK FX 2020 Conference has been expanded this year to two days. Through presentations and panels, delegates will get the inside track on the creation of the effects in extraordinary films, including (titles from the 2019 conference): Welcome to Marwen, Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Alita: Battle Angel. Day tickets are £90pp, but this has been calculated into the overall cost of the trip.

Cultural activities

Alongside the academic itinerary, students will also have plenty of time to visit the Museum of Anthropology, experience cuisine in Vancouver’s China Town, Gastown (formerly the site of various lumber mills, and now home to chic loft apartments, European eateries, cocktail lounges and flashy boutiques) and the Richmond Night Market.

To top this all off, students will have the opportunity to visit a Canadian NHL Ice Hockey game.
