Final year undergraduate students from History programmes and those who are members of DMU Sport Clubs are eligible to participate in this opportunity. This opportunity would also be relevant for final year Marketing students that have completed MARK2320 Sport Marketing. Students studying other areas, particularly with an interest to the business side of sport, are also welcome to apply. The maximum number of places on this opportunity is 50 and the minimum the trip will go ahead with is five. DMU staff will be accompanying the group.
This trip is designed to introduce students to the business side of the sport industry in the United States, including the professional, collegiate, and private side of sport. Students will meet with a variety of individuals who work in the sport industry, including marketing, communications, ticket sales, and operations. Students will also have a chance to attend a professional sporting event in the US, which will provide an interesting comparison to British professional sporting events. Students will gain an understanding about the sport industry in the United States, and this program will serve as a great introduction for students who are interested in working in sport – for which they are recommended to apply to the Business Management in Sport MSc course in the Leicester Castle Business School.
Planned academic activities for this opportunity may include:
Venue tour and talk with Barclays Center and Brooklyn Nets staff. The Barclays Center is the home to the Brooklyn Nets (National Basketball League) and New York Islanders (National Hockey League), and also hosts many other concerts and events.
This tour and talk will take place on the day of the Brooklyn Nets vs. Boston Celtics game. Tickets will be available to purchase and participants are encouraged to attend this game.
Talk with MLB International staff about how a professional sports league Major League Baseball, which only has teams in the US and Canada, organizes events around the globe and markets the sport and game, including securing broadcasting rights for league games in multiple countries. MLB international also has regional offices in London, Tokyo, China, and Mexico, and coordinates with their global staff.
The Armory has been the home of indoor track and field for over 100 years in New York City. The Armory Foundation is dedicated to serving youth by promoting fitness and education through a broad range of athletic, educational and community programs. The Armory annually hosts over 100 track and field competitions for more than 125,000 athletes and 500,000 visitors ranging from elementary school youth to senior citizens. The Armory is home to over 57 high school and 12 professional American records.
The National Track & Field Hall of Fame is also located at the Armory.
Founded in 1974 by tennis legend, Billie Jean King, the Women’s Sports Foundation is dedicated to creating leaders by ensuring all girls access to sports. The Women’s Sport Foundation provides grants and travel support to elite athletes. WSF also runs GoGirlGo!, a landmark educational program for elementary, middle and high school girls that keeps girls involved in physical activity and improves the health of sedentary girls. WSF also runs Sports 4 Life is a national effort to increase the participation and retention of African-American and Hispanic girls, ages 11-18, in developmental youth sports programs. WSF also presents annual awards and maintains the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Travel and accommodation
Flights, accommodation and transfers for this opportunity will be booked by #DMUglobal. Students will stay in shared twin rooms at ROW NYC or Manhattan Hotel Times Square. The £600 #DMUglobal bursary will be deducted from the cost of the booking. Students will be required to pay the remainder via the DMU Online Store within 14 days of receiving an offer of acceptance from #DMUglobal.
Flights will be booked with Virgin Atlantic and Delta to depart and return to London Heathrow – dates and time of travel will be confirmed after you have formally accepted your place on the trip.
