Description

Second year Architecture students are invited to take part in this project in The Loving Community, which is a community of former Leprosy suffers. We will be building houses to support families who are worst affected by the monsoon season. Every year during monsoon season homes in the Loving Community are flooded by extremely contaminated water and the residents have to resort to living in the local community centre for weeks on end.

Each group of students will visit the Loving Community for a period of one week. During the week working groups will be divided between doing surveys of properties, talking to residents or helping with the construction of the homes.  The work you will do on this trip will count towards the coursework in second year modules.

Groups of Architecture students will travel to India to participate in this initiative between November 2018 and February 2019. Students will be placed in groups by faculty staff.

Description

The trip may also include visits to projects by Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn and BV Doshi in the city.  In addition you may visit the Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar, a large Hindu temple complex in Gujurat, as well as its stunning Sat-Chit-Anand Water Show. There will be additional cultural activities embedded into daily activities such as visits to markets and other architectural visits across the city.

Travel and accommodation

Flights, accommodation and transfers for this opportunity will be booked by Square Mile India. Students will stay in a hotel in the heart of the city, and will be required to pay for the accommodation when checking out. The estimated cost for accommodation is £100.
