Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is a student-centered university that values academic excellence, supports growth and celebrates diversity. Located in Northwest Indiana, near Chicago, PNW fosters a vibrant academic community through high quality and engaging undergraduate and graduate education. It offers more than 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to approximately 11,000 students.
The university has two campuses, the main residential campus in Hammond is located 25 miles from downtown Chicago, and the smaller Westville campus. The Hammond campus includes 17 academic and recreational buildings, a fitness center, student housing facilities and is the home of Purdue Northwest baseball, softball, soccer and tennis.
Programmes of study
PNW offers a range of programmes of study across six schools, which include Business, Engineering and Sciences, Humanities and Technology. Full details of the majors on offer can be found on the PNW website. Students studying Nursing and Midwifery are not eligible to apply, as PNW are unable to accept exchange students on their programmes.
Exchange students will be required to follow a full programme of study for the academic year based at PNW.
Student and Campus Life
The Office of Student Life at PNW creates diverse extra-curricular experiences that fit the needs of students via social and civic engagement opportunities. The programming initiatives build a student’s repertoire of personal and professional skills, assists with retention and student success efforts supported by the University.
PSUB is Purdue’s Student Programming Board, provides a variety of programs and services that enrich and entertain. Involvement with PSUB is an extension of your college education outside of the classroom and is a great way to get hands-on experience and develop new skills. They have nearly 100 events every year ranging from Poetry Slams to Battle of the Bands.
It is recommended that you purchase your flights to Chicago once you have your Letter of Acceptance and the required documents to enter the United States of America such as passport, Visa and Study Permit. You can choose between Chicago O’Hare International airport or Chicago Midway International airport and it is recommended that you take advantage of the free airport pick up service that PNW offers or other alternative options are either using a coach U.S.A. Airport Shuttle or an uber/taxi to PNW. More information can be found on PNW website.
Also, whilst at PNW, exchange students can use the Inter-campus bus service with your PNW ID. Service runs Monday through Friday, to and from the Hammond and Westville Campuses. Students’ are also invited to use the PNW Shuttle to and from the supermarket, other shopping areas, post office, bank, East Chicago South Shore train station and other popular, nearby destinations in Hammond, Highland, Munster and Schererville.
It is recommend that all exchange students should live on campus because you will be able to build social networks and integrate into the PNW student community.
You should only apply to live in Residence as an exchange student after you receive your Letter of Acceptance with your PNW ID#. For more information check out PNW Housing webpage.

To take part in this exchange you are responsible for ensuring that meet USA visa requirements. Further visa information will be provided to all accepted students.
DMU insurance is not sufficient for studying on exchange in the United States of America, and students are required to purchase medical insurance while attending PNW.
