New York City hosts an extensive range of photography and art galleries beyond anything available in a single city in Europe. This trip provides the opportunity to experience a very broad range of the latest in Contemporary Photography, Moving Image and Fine Art. Teaching staff will accompany you around the galleries and museums, introducing you to a wealth of exciting work. Having visited New York many times before, they will also be on hand to help you select which cultural highlights you might like to explore in your free time. You will also have the opportunity to meet and work with staff and students from the Photography course at the prestigious New School University.
We will visit world-famous galleries including the Museum of Modern Art as well as experience a tour of the prestigious International Centre of Photography. There are also many private photography galleries in New York City giving you the chance to see a huge range of photography and art for free.
Two of the learning outcomes students for this trip are that students undertake research using creative methods and professional practices and articulate an awareness of the development of lens based, still and moving image practice in the 20th and 21st century, and place it within a social, political and economic context.
As well as organised trips to galleries and museums, you will have the opportunity to explore some of New York’s most famous and exciting landmarks, venues and districts. Other museums you could visit include the American Museum of Natural History or the Guggenheim. If you have a head for heights, you can enjoy the views from the top of the Empire State Building, the observation deck of the Rockefeller Center or the tallest building of them all, the One World Trade Center. If you fancy a trip on the Hudson River you can take the free Staten Island Ferry which passes the Statue of Liberty. Another highlight for photographers is to explore the High Line, a former raised subway track now converted into a park and made famous by photographer Joel Sternfeld.
Manhattan has many diverse and eclectic districts each with their own personality and style, from the alternative culture of Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, to the huge department stores on the Upper East Side’s Madison Avenue. On last year’s trip, students ventured out to Coney Island providing a fantastic photographic opportunity to shoot a seaside resort in the snow.
