All DMU undergraduate students are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Successful applicants are expected to show a demonstrable interest in the topic of intercultural awareness, and we particularly welcome applications from:
- Students that are in receipt of hardship funding
- Students from widening participation backgrounds
- Students that haven’t participated in #DMUglobal previously
- Students that may face barriers to overseas travel, and would benefit from a campus-based experience
The maximum number of places on this opportunity is 30, and the minimum number of students required is 15 for the programme to go ahead. Please check our eligibility criteria for further details.

The Intercultural Awareness Certificate (IAC) offered by #DMUglobal gives DMU students the opportunity to have an internationally-themed experience on campus, without the need to travel overseas. This programme of activity will develop knowledge, skills and values helping you to become an informed, engaged and responsive global citizen.
You will enhance your intercultural awareness and knowledge of global issues through participation in a range of different experiential learning activities throughout the year (approximately 20 hours of activity). Successful applicants are required to pay a £30 commitment fee, which will act as a deposit for an overseas #DMUglobal trip in June 2020. The programme of activity will include:
Introductory workshop (2 hours) – that will give students an overview of the Intercultural Awareness Certificate and the planned activities. Dr Karen Malan (Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the MSc in Intercultural Business Communication at LCBS) will give an introduction to the concept of intercultural awareness as part of the workshop.
Volunteering with DMUlocal – as part of the IAC, all participants are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of volunteering with DMUlocal that has an intercultural focus and involves engagement with people from different cultures. Volunteering opportunities may include:
- Red cross volunteering
- Supporting with the organisation of refugee football matches
- Engaging with Boot Room donations drives for sportswear for refugees
- Attending drop-in sessions at the City of Sanctuary
- ‘Share a meal’ which involves cooking dish and sharing at a meal event with refugees in the city
Intercultural experiences -you can also engage in a range of optional supplementary intercultural experiences that will enhance your learning. These may include:
- TEFL 50 hour combined course (£50 fee)
- Learn a foreign language (£30 fee)
- Evening lectures based around a range of global issues and themes
Global Issues workshop – A follow-up workshop (2 hours) with interactive activities delivered by Dr Karen Malan. The session will focus on a range of global issues, and will help inform student’s choice of topic for the reflective piece of work.
Reflection and graduation – all participants that complete the mandatory steps above will be asked to deliver a short 5 minute presentation about a topic, issue or intercultural experience of their own that has formed part of the programme. Creative approaches to the presentation are encouraged. Following completion of these steps, all students will receive their Intercultural Awareness Certificate in a mini graduation ceremony.
Intercultural Awareness trip -participants will be invited to participate in an overseas #DMUglobal trip with an intercultural awareness and volunteering focus. The trip will be to a European city for 4 days (Berlin, Brussels or Amsterdam TBC) with the flight and accommodation costs covered by #DMUglobal.

Accepting your place
Following your confirmation email, you will be asked to accept your place via our online application system and pay the £30 participation fee within 10 days. Following completion of these steps, you will be sent a formal invitation to the introductory workshop on Wednesday 20 November 2019.
