Universities such as De Montfort University (DMU) have a major responsibility to contribute to society through their public engagement and to bring about positive change for the public good. At the centre of DMU’s engagement strategy is the award-winning Square Mile programme.

Positive outcomes from the Square Mile programme have helped to shape #DMUlocal, a ground breaking partnership between Leicester City Council and the university. #DMUlocal uses higher education to respond to some of the most critical challenges facing our city, with a focus on three key areas:

  • Improving children’s education
  • Supporting the wider community
  • Boosting the local economy

DMU Square Mile and #DMUlocal would like to harness student’s skills and expertise further by transferring knowledge with organisations that are supporting local communities through outreach programmes in New York.

This trip will research and investigate how the notion of public engagement works towards positively transforming neighbourhoods across New York and as a result, this will assist in further developing and enhancing DMU public engagement across Leicester.

Students will be required to document their experiences through blogging, vlogging, photography and/or podcasting. Upon returning, students will deliver a short presentation of their experience to members of the DMU Public Engagement team.

Planned activities for this opportunity may include:

Orientation and Induction into SAGE

Students will be offered the opportunity to learn more about SAGE and the LGBT community in New York City through an open discussion followed by a Q&A session with local members of the organisation. Potential volunteering opportunity may be available through the evening meal service to members of SAGE.

SAGE offers innovative services and programs to LGBT older people throughout New York City and nationwide through our affiliate network, SAGENet. From arts and culture, to health and wellness, employment assistance, and much more, SAGE’s innovative services and programs support thousands of LGBT older people in communities around the country.

Columbia University: Community Impact Volunteering Emergency Food Program

Volunteer alongside Community Impact coordinators and volunteer staff to help support their weekly Food Pantry on Mondays and Thursdays. Fresh food and dry goods, donated by community groups is provided to neighbourhood families, homeless individuals and the elderly. Ford Hall also has a closet of warm clothes for our clients.

Community Impact serves individuals in need in the communities of Upper Manhattan while providing meaningful volunteering and leadership opportunities for students at Columbia University and Barnard College.

Broadway Community Inc – The Soup Kitchen

Help serve meals with the Broadway Community and ensure their guests receive good, quality support.

Broadway Community depends on the critical contributions of volunteers: regular and infrequent, those from West Harlem and throughout New York, as well as groups from around the country. We value your contributions to our work and hope you will come to know our guests and get involved in the wider struggle to end poverty and homelessness.

 South Bronx United

Volunteer to support a local football club by helping organise and facilitate their after school soccer coach sessions.

This seven-year-old youth development organization makes sure that kids who participate in the program are kicking butt both on the soccer field and in the classroom. Volunteer tutors spend at least one afternoon per week working with players on homework, plus math and literacy activities; meanwhile, recreational and travel-league coaches develop players’ soccer skills while weaving in lessons about teamwork and leadership.
