As part of DMU Square Mile India, current DMU students will travel alongside DMU staff to Ahmedabad to volunteer together and make a difference. Students will have an opportunity to participate in one of the three strands below:
English Language Teaching:
Five MA ELT students will be involved in helping the English classes running at five community centres owned by Manav Sadhan. Specifically, the students will help the local English teachers develop a curriculum to guide the teaching practice, so that the teaching could be carried out in a sequential and scientific way, rather than in a piece meal manner. On the other hand, the local students are able to learn and to make progress accordingly.
In addition, the ELT students will also help with updating teaching materials to make the teaching content more interesting. Such interaction is believed to be beneficial on both sides. For one thing, MA students will gain first-hand experience relating to what they are learning in class, which is most likely to enhance their learning in the following modules. For another, our students’ participation may result in more standardised English teaching in the local community centres, where English language skill is considered a life changing tool for their future.
Moving Together: 2nd year Drama, Dance, Performance Arts
Moving Together will be working with students across the Performing Arts courses to deliver practical dance sessions at Manav Sadhna community centres in Ahmedabad, India. Workshops will be provided to a variety of community groups including pre-school, age 5-15, teenagers, and older women in numerous locations. Dance styles will vary from contemporary to Bollywood, giving everyone an opportunity to share skills and learn from each other.
Students will have the chance to prepare, lead and evaluate their own workshops with the support from Moving Together staff. During the past 2 years students have been able to pass on their passion for the performing arts by working with the wonderful people in the Gandhi Ashram. The programme will provide students with invaluable experience of teaching and leading dance in the community, and the pure enthusiasm for the art form from the participants involved is incredibly inspiring. Cultural activities will be incorporated into the programme of activity.
Design Crafts: 2nd year Design Crafts
Design Craft Students and staff will deliver practical workshops to pass on their creative approach to designing and making contemporary home/ personal accessories and gift items using traditional craft skills to women of Gramshree in Ahmedabad, India. Gramshree is an organisation that works with more than 2000 women in the slums and lower-income areas of Ahmedabad and the rural regions of Patan, Mehsana, Kutch, Bhavnagar and Bharuch.
Students will have the chance to prepare, lead and evaluate their own workshops with the support from staff. Together we aim to develop a range of locally produced craft products which celebrates the diversity of their city and is inspired by industrial heritage and reputation. We aim to support the mission of Craftroots an initiative set up by Gramshree in reviving, preserving and sharing the craft traditions of India and develop a sustainable and scalable model for craft development by exchanging experiences, adding value and enrichment to all participants’ in becoming lifelong learners.
