Students are invited to experience volunteering in Calais to support refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. As part of this opportunity,
students will take part in a range of activities with local charitable organisations as well as having time to experience the culture of
This trip will enable students to explore and exchange knowledge with charities, organisations and individuals from across Calais who are striving to work together to support refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.
Activities will include engaging with Secour Catholique by running practical language, sports, arts or social workshops and activities for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in Calais, as well as helping out at a distribution centre which is providing essential support and supplies to individuals who are destitute. ArtReach, producers of Journeys Festival International, and DMU Local will support students to develop workshops and activities based on their skills and interests ahead of the trip.
In addition to the organised activities, students will have the opportunity to explore the culture and sights of Calais, visiting the Musee des Beaux Arts de Calais, Calais Beach, and the Burghers of Calais. There will also be opportunities to work with Journeys Festival International’s Producers to develop ideas and projects for the festival in May 2020 (Portsmouth), August 2020 (Leicester) and October 2020 (Manchester), and beyond.
Travel and Accommodation
Travel (coach/ferry crossing) and accommodation for this opportunity will be booked by DMU Square Mile, and students will be expected to pay the full amount following confirmation of their place.

In order to participate in this trip, you are responsible for ensuring that you meet the French immigration requirements.
EU nationals will not require a visa to travel to another EU country.
Non-EU nationals will require a visa to travel to France and are responsible for obtaining a Schengen visa. Once accepted, should you require visa advice, please contact the #DMUglobal team.
The #DMUglobal team can provide visa support letters as required, and proof of enrolment can be obtained from the Student Gateway. You must ensure that you apply for your Schengen visa as soon as you have been formally accepted to this opportunity by #DMUglobal. You are responsible for checking processing times and meeting all application requirements in order to ensure that you receive your visa prior to departure. Be aware that immigration decisions are made by individual embassies.
