Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is the oldest educational institution south of Virginia, and the 13th oldest in the United States. The College of Charleston offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs and has more than 10,000 current students.
Located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, the College of Charleston is noted for its beautiful campus and is ranked as one of the top 10 best landscaped colleges on the east coast.
Programmes of study
College of Charleston offers a range of programmes of study that include Math, Business, Music, Theatre, Computing in the Arts, International Studies and so on. Full details of the majors on offer can be found on the College of Charleston website.
Exchange students will be required to follow a full programme of study for the academic year based at the College of Charleston.
Campus activities and events
At the College of Charleston, there are hundreds of ways to get involved and make the most out of your experience. Find out what it’s like to be a student at Charleston by reading their student blogs. As an exchange student, you also have the opportunity to join one of their Clubs and Organizations such as Asian Student Association, Gymnastics, Show Choir and so on. At Charleston as an exchange student, you are also able to sign up for Outdoor Adventures such as Sea kayaking, rock climbing and stand up paddle boarding.
The College of Charleston also offers Fitness Opportunities which include Zumba, Yoga, and Indoor Cycling. The Sports and Recreation organize flag football, kickball and midnight basketball leagues among other activities. On campus, the Johnson and Silcox Centers have basketball, volleyball and badminton courts, as well as an indoor track and squash courts, a dance/yoga studio and weights and cardio equipment.
It is recommended that you purchase your flights to Charleston once you have your Letter of Acceptance and the required documents to enter the United States such as passport, Visa and Study Permit. When you arrive at Charleston International Airport, depending on arrival time, airport pick up may be available. The airport is approximately 20 minutes from the College of Charleston campus by taxi.
Also, whilst at College of Charleston, exchange students qualify to travel on all Charleston Area Regional Transit Authority (CARTA) buses for free. All you have to do is present your Cougar Card (College of Charleston ID) and you’re good to go. For full information on CARTA schedules and routes, log on to the CARTA website.
It is recommend that all exchange students should live on campus because you will be able to build social networks and integrate into the College of Charleston student community.

DMU insurance is not sufficient for studying on exchange in the United States, and students are required to purchase emergency medical insurance while attending College of Charleston. For more information, please see the College of Charleston Website.
Fees and costs
Whilst studying at College of Charleston, you do not need to pay any tuition fees. You will be required to pay for the following: accommodation, meal plan, health insurance and books.
