Eligibility

Film and Media Studies students enrolled on Professional Practice: Film Festivals (FILM2009) are eligible to apply for this opportunity,with the trip also being beneficial for current first year Film Studies students who will be taking FILM2009 in their second year. The maximum number of places on this opportunity is 20 and the minimum number the trip will go ahead with is 10. DMU staff will be accompanying the group.

Description

The trip to Cannes offers students a unique opportunity to engage in the world’s most prestigious and influential film festival. It is a film festival unlike any other, where the whole town is taken over hosting networking events, screenings and industry meetings.

The Cannes Film Festival will expose students to all aspects of the film industry from screenings to sales, and distribution to funding, and through this learn how to capitalize on an international marketplace where films are bought, sold, distributed and financed. Students will be able to enjoy the numerous networking events, and meet with various film councils, distributors and sales agents, making invaluable industry contacts.

Students will also get the opportunity to engage with other small scale film makers in the Short Film corner an ever expanding marketplace for short films. In the evenings Cannes plays host to numerous industry gatherings and a particular night time highlight is the free beach film screenings with on site deckchairs and blankets provided.

From participating on this trips students will get unique firsthand experience of the world’s leading film festival and will gain an understanding of how film markets work in terms of financing and sales. Moreover, they will have the chance to network with industry professionals and enhance their knowledge of how the film industry works.

Cultural activities

Students will participate in the activities and culture of the Cannes Film Festival and witness how the Festival occupies and interacts with the City of Cannes and its environs. They will experience the buzz and celebrity-driven culture of the Festival alongside the serious global business of cinema and its international market places in action.

Students will participate in the different types of cinema-related activities taking place, including ‘Cinema on the Beach‘ screenings, film premieres and archive showcases across the various cinemas and venues occupied by the Festival in Cannes. They will have access to the public and delegate spaces of the cinema such as the various hotels and conference venues used for the press, media and the ‘Cannes Dailies’.

Travel and accommodation

  • Travel – Students are required to independently book their travel
  • Accommodation – The faculty will book accommodation for this opportunity, and students will be expected to pay the full amount following confirmation of their place.

Visa information

In order to participate in this trip, you are responsible for ensuring that you meet the French immigration requirements.

EU nationals will not require a visa to travel to another EU country.

Non-EU nationals will require a visa to travel to France and are responsible for obtaining a Schengen visa. Once accepted, should you require visa advice, please attend one of DSU Advice Centre’s Visa Advice Sessions.

The #DMUglobal team can provide visa support letters as required, and proof of enrolment can be obtained from the Student Gateway. You must ensure that you apply for your Schengen visa as soon as you have been formally accepted to this opportunity by #DMUglobal. You are responsible for checking processing times and meeting all application requirements in order to ensure that you receive your visa prior to departure. Be aware that immigration decisions are made by individual embassies.
